AIO vs SEO (and AEO): What Colorado Business Owners Need to Know in 2026

SEO gets you ranked on Google. AIO works on getting you recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers. A head-to-head comparison with my real prices, Google's own guidance, and a decision framework for Colorado businesses.

TL;DR Too Long; Didn't Read

SEO puts you in front of people searching Google. AIO (also called AEO or GEO) works on getting your business named when people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI for a recommendation. They share a foundation: Google says there are no special requirements to appear in its AI Overviews and that all existing SEO fundamentals still matter. AIO adds work on top of that foundation. At KREAKTIVE, that means checking what six AI platforms say about you, building topic clusters, and earning mentions on the sites AI tools cite. SEO is $1,500 or $2,800 a month, and AIO is a +$797 add-on, so running both means the plan plus $797 a month. If your Google presence is weak, fix that first. Add AIO when your customers are asking AI who to hire.

SEO works on getting you ranked. AIO works on getting you recommended. Most established Colorado businesses benefit from both.

That is the shortest honest summary I can give you. The details matter, though, because the wrong choice wastes money and the right one builds on itself. Below is what each service does, what it costs, and how to decide which one (or both) your business needs right now.

What SEO Actually Does (The Short Version)

Search Engine Optimization gets your website to show up when someone types a query into Google. It works through three pillars: technical optimization (making sure Google can crawl and understand your site), content (pages that match what people are searching for), and authority (links and reputation signals that tell Google you are trustworthy).

When SEO works, your website appears in the “10 blue links” on Google’s results page. The user clicks your link, visits your site, and (ideally) calls you or fills out a form.

I have a full SEO guide for small businesses if you want the deep version, and a complete breakdown of what SEO packages include if you are evaluating providers. Here I’ll keep each explanation short and stick to the comparison.

What SEO does well: Capturing people who already know what they want and are actively searching for it. “Plumber near me.” “CPA firm Denver.” “Emergency roof repair Colorado Springs.” These are high-intent searches, and ranking for them puts your business in front of people who are ready to buy.

What AIO Actually Does (The Short Version)

AI Optimization works on getting your business recommended when someone asks an AI tool for a suggestion. Instead of typing a search into Google, some people now open ChatGPT or Perplexity, or read Google’s AI Overview at the top of the results, and ask: “Who’s a good web designer in Colorado?” or “What marketing agency should I hire for SEO in Denver?”

The AI answers with names and reasons.

AIO works through entity clarity (making sure AI systems understand exactly what your business does and where), content specific enough for an AI to quote, and third-party mentions (reviews, directory listings, and articles that confirm your business is real).

I wrote a complete guide to AI Optimization that covers the five pillars in detail. The short version: AIO works on getting your business known and cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Claude, Copilot, and Gemini.

What AIO does well: Getting your business named when someone asks an AI for a recommendation, especially when they never click through to a website at all. An Incremys roundup of 2026 GEO statistics puts searches that end without a click at 60%, citing a 2025 Squid Impact study. If the answer sits on the results page, the business named in it gets the attention.

AIO, AEO, and GEO: Three Names for the Same Job

If you’ve been reading about AI search, you’ve probably seen three acronyms: AIO (AI optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization), and GEO (generative engine optimization). They describe the same goal: getting your business named in the answers AI tools give. So when you compare AEO vs SEO, everything in this post applies. I use “AIO” because that’s what I named my AIO service, but the work is identical.

AEO looks like the name that’s sticking, and the search data points that way. When I pulled Google Ads search volumes in October 2026, US searches for “what is aeo” had grown from 2,900 to 6,600 a month over the 12 months to August 2026, while “ai optimization” had dropped from 2,900 to 1,000. There’s a practical reason, too: when I searched “what is aio,” most of Google’s results were about all-in-one computers and liquid CPU coolers, not marketing.

Here’s the part most AEO articles skip. Google’s own documentation says “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary,” and that “all existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile.” It also says a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” to show up as a supporting link, and that “There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.” You can read it in Google’s guide to AI features.

So for Google’s AI answers, AEO is SEO done well, plus the extra work in the comparison below: consistent business details everywhere, mentions on other sites, and content specific enough for an AI to quote. That’s also how it played out for a Colorado Springs CPA firm, WCG CPAs & Advisors. I handled the design, UX and content architecture of their site redesign, my partner eSEO Space handled the WordPress development, and we worked on the SEO and AIO together. As of February 2026, the WCG CPAs case study shows 991 keywords in the top 3 and Google’s AI Overviews citing WCG content on 175 keyword queries.

Here is how the two compare on the things that affect your business.

Both rest on the same foundation: good content, consistent business information, and authority signals. The tactics split after that.

Common SEO work: Keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, technical audits, content planned around what people search, Google Business Profile optimization, local citation cleanup.

Common AIO work you’ll see described across the industry: Checking what AI tools say about your business, making your business details consistent across the web, earning mentions on the sites AI tools cite, and publishing clusters of content on the topics you want to be known for.

What my AI Visibility add-on includes: Three things every month, and nothing else is promised. Monitoring on 6 platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Claude, Copilot, Gemini), topic clusters, and citation building.

What This Looks Like for a Colorado Business

Say you run a roofing company in Colorado Springs. When someone types “roofing company Colorado Springs” into Google, your SEO determines whether your website shows up in those results. If you rank on the first page, you get calls. If you do not, your competitor gets them.

Some homeowners skip that step. They open ChatGPT on their phone and ask: “My roof is leaking after the hailstorm. Who should I call in Colorado Springs?” ChatGPT answers with a few names. AIO is the work aimed at getting your business onto that list.

A lot of AI-search articles miss that the businesses AI tools name are often the ones that already rank. The same Incremys roundup reports that “99% of AI Overviews cite the organic top 10” and that “87% of ChatGPT quotes correspond to the top Bing results,” both from Squid Impact (2025). Strong rankings are your ticket in. And since that second figure is about Bing, not Google, check how you show up on Bing too.

Ranking still doesn’t mean you’re the one named. You can rank #1 and watch an AI Overview answer the question above your listing, so the searcher never scrolls down to you. And when I run the ChatGPT test live with business owners, it’s rare for them to be named at all. Either gap costs you leads.

Past Result (2024): Best Construction, Colorado Springs

In July 2024, a Colorado Springs bathroom remodeler came to me ranking #13 on Google Maps for their main keywords. Within 60 days of the new website and local SEO work, they were #2. The bigger win came from the research: 800+ monthly searches for accessible bathroom remodeling in Colorado Springs that no competitor was targeting, which went on to bring in over $200K in new revenue. That’s SEO doing what it does well: putting you in front of people who are already looking, and finding revenue hiding in the search data. One honest note: this was 2024, so treat it as a past result, not a picture of where they rank today. Read the full case study

When You Need SEO Only

Not every business needs AIO right now.

Think about a plumber in Pueblo whose calls all come from Google searches like “plumber near me.” If your target customers are not using AI tools to find businesses like yours, the return on AIO is not there yet. SEO first.

Same logic applies if your Google presence is the immediate problem. If you are not ranking at all, if your website has technical issues, no content strategy, and zero keyword rankings, those fundamentals come first. Google says its AI features run on the same SEO fundamentals, so fix the foundation before you try to build a second story.

Budget matters too. Running both SEO and AIO means $1,500 for SEO plus $797 for the AIO add-on every month. If your budget is closer to $1,500/month, put it all into SEO and get the foundation right. You can add AIO later.

And if your local competitors have outdated websites and no SEO presence? That is a land grab. Claim Google first, then work on AI visibility once your organic traffic is established.

When You Need AIO Only

This scenario is less common, but it exists.

The usual case is a business that already ranks well on Google but is watching clicks disappear. Your listing ranks well for your main keywords, and yet AI Overviews answer the question before anyone scrolls down to it. AIO works on getting you named in those AI-generated answers instead of being bypassed by them.

It also applies when your customers have already shifted to AI-first discovery. If your prospects are asking ChatGPT “who should I hire for…” instead of Googling it, AIO addresses that specific shift.

Then there is the David vs. Goliath situation. In some industries, catching up on Google against competitors who have invested for a decade is unrealistic on a small business budget. Be clear-eyed about this one: Google says its AI features run on the same SEO fundamentals, so AIO is not a shortcut around a weak Google presence. Where it can help is the other places AI tools pull from: the industry publications, directories, and expert roundups that mention businesses in your category.

One note on how I sell it: at KREAKTIVE, AIO is an add-on to a Search Visibility plan, not a standalone service. Even an AIO-first business gets the SEO foundation underneath it.

When You Need Both

In my view, most established Colorado businesses that can afford it should be running both, because people now find businesses in more than one place.

Some customers use Google. Some use ChatGPT. Some start with AI and then verify on Google. If you are only visible on one channel, you are missing the people on the other.

The two services also reinforce each other. Strong SEO content is the raw material AI tools quote, which is why so many AI Overview citations come from pages that already rank. And when an AI recommendation sends someone to Google to check you out, your SEO presence confirms the recommendation.

Colorado specifically: when I reviewed the websites of the agencies I compete with most directly in May 2026, several mentioned AI or GEO search, mostly as a feature inside their SEO work. Almost none led with it. So if your competitors haven’t started on AI search, their agencies may not be pushing them to.

Then run the math. If your average customer is worth $1,500, SEO pays for itself with 1 customer per month. If your average job is worth more than $797 and AI visibility brings you one extra customer per month, the add-on pays for itself too. That’s a what-if to test against your own numbers, not a forecast.

Real Result: Secrets of the Tribe, Denver

This Denver herbal supplements store was up against Gaia Herbs (a $50M+ company) with a basic Shopify template. I led the competitive analysis, redesign, and content strategy, and my partner eSEO Space handled the Shopify development. Three months after launch, they held 49 #1 rankings and 3,277 total ranking keywords. They already had a solid SEO base (3,200+ keywords) before the redesign, so this was building on a foundation, not starting from zero. To be clear about what this shows: it was website and SEO work, with no AIO, so it shows the search foundation AI tools draw from, not AI citations. Read the full case study

Search Visibility is for businesses whose competitors are not doing SEO. It is a land grab: claim the territory before they wake up.

Search Visibility Pro is for businesses whose competitors are already investing in SEO. You need to outpace them, not just match their effort.

Both tiers have a 3-month minimum, then month-to-month. Google takes time to start ranking a site; it does not happen in 24 hours. After the minimum, I earn my stay every month. Full SEO pricing breakdown

Running both services together means you pay the plan plus the add-on: $1,500 plus $797 a month on Search Visibility, or $2,800 plus $797 on Search Visibility Pro. 3-month minimum, then month-to-month. The two services share a foundation of good content and authority, so running them together means each supports the other.

The Colorado Market Opportunity

Here is what I can tell you about the Colorado market, and what I can’t.

In May 2026 I went through the websites of the agencies I compete with most directly, most of them in Colorado Springs, Denver, and Boulder. Several mention AI or GEO search, including a 350-person Colorado Springs firm. Most present it as a feature of their SEO work. Almost none lead with it as a service of its own.

I’m not the only one with a public price, either. At least one Colorado Springs agency publishes a monthly package that includes AI work. What I do differently is sell AIO as its own add-on at +$797 a month, with three things in it and nothing else promised, so you can see what you pay for.

What does that mean for you? If your competitors and their agencies treat AI search as an afterthought, there is room to get ahead in the AI answers for your category. How much room depends on your market. Run the test in the framework below to see it for yourself.

Will early AIO work keep paying off the way early SEO work often has? I think so, and I’ve worked in digital marketing since 2009. But AI search is too new for anyone to prove it yet, and nobody controls what ChatGPT or Google’s AI decides to say.

How to Decide: A Quick Framework

Answer these four questions honestly.

1. Where are your customers searching?

Open ChatGPT and Perplexity. Ask: “Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?” If your business is not mentioned, you have an AIO gap. Then Google the same query. If your website is not on the first page, you have an SEO gap. Do both tests.

2. What are your competitors doing?

Check whether your closest competitors show up in AI answers. Check whether they rank above you on Google. If they are winning on Google but invisible to AI, SEO is your priority (you need to catch up where they are strong). If they are invisible to both, you have a chance to get ahead on both channels at once.

3. What is your budget?

  • Under $1,500/month: Focus on SEO basics. Do what you can yourself (here is my DIY vs professional framework) and invest in professional help when budget allows.
  • Around $1,500/month: Start with SEO (Search Visibility). Build the foundation first, then add AIO once the 3-month minimum is behind you and you can see how SEO is moving.
  • Enough for the plan plus the add-on ($1,500 plus $797 a month): Run SEO and AIO from day one.

4. How urgent is your competitive situation?

If competitors are actively outranking you on Google, SEO is the immediate priority. If you rank well but are losing leads to AI-driven discovery, AIO addresses the specific gap. If you have the budget and both channels matter, running both together means you don’t have to pick an order.

The short version of the decision:

  • SEO first if your Google presence is the bottleneck.
  • AIO first if you already rank well but AI is recommending competitors.
  • Both together if you can afford it and want them supporting each other from day one.

What Happens If You Wait

On Google, waiting has a cost you can see. Even when you start, rankings and calls usually take 60 to 90 days to follow the work for a local business. Every month a competitor publishes and collects reviews before you do is a month you have to make up later.

On AI search, I won’t pretend I can measure the cost of waiting yet. My expectation is that AI visibility compounds the way SEO does: the more sites mention you and the more of your content AI tools can quote, the more material they have to name you. That’s an expectation, not a promise. AI platforms move on their own clock, not mine.

The cheapest way to find out where you stand is the first test in the framework above. If you’d rather do it together, get in touch. We’ll run the ChatGPT test live and look at where you show up on Google. No pitch, just an honest read on where to put your money first.

Frequently Asked Questions

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: getting your business named in the answers AI tools give, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. It's the same job I call AIO (AI optimization), and you'll also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization). The names differ; the work is the same.

AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that all existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile. A page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown as a supporting link, and Google says no special structured data is needed. AEO adds work on top of that foundation, like making your business details consistent everywhere and writing content an AI can quote.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) works on getting your website ranked in Google's search results. AIO (AI Optimization) works on getting your business recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews when people ask for suggestions. SEO focuses on keywords, links, and technical health. AIO focuses on entity clarity, content an AI can quote, and mentions on other sites. For most businesses that can afford it, I recommend running both.

Not with me, and I would not recommend it for most businesses. At KREAKTIVE, AIO is an add-on to a Search Visibility plan and is not sold on its own. Google says its AI features run on the same SEO fundamentals, and if someone finds your business through AI and then Googles you to check, weak SEO means a weak impression. Start with SEO if budget is limited, then add AIO on top.

At KREAKTIVE, SEO is $1,500 per month (Search Visibility) or $2,800 per month (Search Visibility Pro), and AIO is an add-on at +$797 per month (AI Visibility). Running both together means the plan plus the add-on: $1,500 plus $797 a month, or $2,800 plus $797 with Search Visibility Pro. Search Visibility plans have a 3-month minimum, then run month-to-month, and the add-on is billed monthly with the plan.

Usually 60 to 90 days for AI platforms to start picking up your business, based on past work. That is an expectation, not a promise. I don't control what ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI choose to say. For SEO, rankings and calls usually follow in 60 to 90 days for a local business, and 3 to 6 months for competitive keywords.

It depends on your industry and customers. If your customers ask AI tools who to hire, AIO matters. If they find you on Google and nowhere else, SEO comes first. The quickest check: ask ChatGPT who the best business like yours is in your city. When I run that test live with business owners, it's rare for them to be named.

Not if your SEO foundation is in place. The work overlaps with SEO, since Google says its AI features run on the same SEO fundamentals, so it isn't wasted. Interest is growing: US searches for "what is aeo" grew from 2,900 to 6,600 a month over the 12 months to August 2026. And the add-on is billed monthly with your plan. If your Google presence is weak, though, it is too early: fix that first.
