How local SEO works

From invisible to top of Google Maps.

Audit your local presence

I check your Google Business Profile, citations, reviews, and local rankings. Most businesses have fixable issues holding them back.

Optimize your GBP

Complete profile optimization, category selection, posts, Q&A, and photo strategy. This alone can move rankings.

Build local authority

Citation building, local link acquisition, and review generation. Google needs consistent signals that you serve this area.

Create local content

Service-area pages, local blog posts, and community content that tells Google you belong in local results.

Who you're hiring

Why should you trust me?

My agency was a Google ActΓvate success story.

I didn't learn SEO from a blog. I've worked in digital marketing for 17 years, 15 of them running my own agency. Google featured that agency, KREAKTIVE, in a Google ActΓvate story (screenshot, Oct 2026) after I took their ActΓvate digital marketing course. I moved to Colorado Springs in 2023 and brought KREAKTIVE with me (it operated as Digital Marketing Services until 2026). Today I use the same skills to get Colorado small businesses found on Google and AI search.

Before you hire anyone

Local SEO red flags to watch for

Every agency claims they "do local SEO," but most just set up your Google Business Profile and stop there. Before you pay someone to get you more local customers, check for these warning signs:

"We'll get you #1 on Google Maps"

What you see on Google Maps depends on where you're standing when you search. Someone across town sees different results than someone next door. Anyone guaranteeing a specific Maps position doesn't understand how local search works.

They only work on your website

When someone searches "plumber near me," Google shows your business listing first, not your website. If they're ignoring your Google Business Profile, your photos, your reviews, and your posts, they're skipping the part that actually gets you calls.

They brag about listing you on hundreds of directories

Most of those directories are junk sites nobody visits. What matters is being listed correctly on the 20 to 30 sites that Google actually trusts. Ask them to name the directories. If they can't, it's automated spam.

They never mention reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest reasons Google shows one business over another in local results. If they never talk about how to get more reviews or how to respond to them, they're ignoring one of your most powerful tools.

They use the same playbook for every city

Your competition in Denver is completely different from your competition in Pueblo. If they copy and paste the same strategy across every city you serve, they'll get copy-and-paste results: none.

Ask: "Can you show me a client's local ranking map?"

Good local SEO providers can show you a visual grid of how a client ranks across different zip codes in their city. If they only show you standard search rankings, they're not actually measuring local visibility.

Their city pages all say the same thing

If your "Denver" page and your "Colorado Springs" page are identical except for the city name, Google will ignore both. Real local pages need real local content. Otherwise, you're paying for pages that will never rank.

They report impressions instead of phone calls

You hired them to get your phone to ring. If their reports show "impressions" and "clicks" but never mention how many people actually called you or asked for directions, they can't tell you if it's working.

Problems I solve every day

Sound familiar?

“I search for my own business on Google Maps and I'm nowhere near the top”

That's more common than you'd think, and it's usually fixable. Most local businesses have a few simple issues holding them back. Here's how I'll get you visible:

  • Fully optimize your Google Business Profile so Google knows exactly what you do and where
  • Build consistent listings across the directories that actually matter for local rankings
  • Create a review strategy that gets real customers talking about you online
  • Develop city-specific content that proves to Google you belong in local results

“My competitor has fewer reviews and worse service but they show up above me”

Rankings aren't about who deserves to rank. They're about who sends Google the right signals. The good news is those signals are things I can fix:

  • Audit exactly why they're outranking you in the local pack
  • Fix the gaps in your profile, citations, and website that are holding you back
  • Build local authority through the right links and mentions in your area
  • Track your rankings across different zip codes so we know it's actually working

“I serve multiple cities but only show up in one”

Expanding your local reach is one of the most effective ways to grow a service business. Here's how I'll help you show up in every city you serve:

  • Create unique, locally relevant pages for each city (not just copy-paste with the name swapped)
  • Optimize your service area settings so Google knows your full coverage
  • Build local citations and links in each target area
  • Track rankings city by city so you can see exactly where you're gaining ground

My tools

The tools I pay for, and the free ones from Google

I pay for both Semrush and Ahrefs and compare them, because their data sometimes really differ. I use Local Falcon for grid scans: one search, checked from many points across a service area, because when you search for your own business you'll often rank #1 simply because Google knows where you're searching from. I also pay for BrightLocal and Whitespark, two local SEO tools.

The free ones matter just as much. Semrush positions are modelled, so I confirm movement in Google Search Console before I quote a number. GA4 shows what visitors do, and PageSpeed Insights measures speed. I have no affiliate deal with any of these companies.

Common questions

Local SEO FAQs

Quick answers to help you decide.

Local SEO is included in both of my SEO plans. Search Visibility ($1,500/month) includes Google Business Profile and reviews work, site improvements, 4 articles or local pages per month, competitor watch, a shared worklog, and reports against your launch baseline. Search Visibility Pro ($2,800/month) scales to 12 articles or local pages per month with weekly competitor monitoring. Both have a 3-month minimum, then monthly.

Clients typically see local pack movement within 2 to 4 months. That is an expectation based on past work, not a promise. The timeline depends on your competition, your review count, and how established your online presence is. I'll give you realistic expectations after looking at your specific market.

Regular SEO gets your website ranking in organic search results nationwide. Local SEO gets you into the Google Maps 3-pack and local search results for people searching near you. Different ranking factors, different strategy. Local SEO leans heavily on your Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews, and location-specific content. Most local businesses need both, but local SEO drives the calls and walk-ins.

Having a profile and having an optimized profile are two different things. Most businesses fill out the basics and stop there. Local SEO means choosing the right categories, publishing regular posts, building citations across 50+ directories, earning reviews consistently, and creating location-specific content on your website. The profile alone won't get you into the map pack in a competitive market.

Yes. Each city gets its own landing page, citation profile, and keyword tracking. If you have a physical location in each city, we optimize a separate Google Business Profile for each. For service-area businesses covering multiple cities from one location, the strategy differs but still works. Search Visibility Pro is ideal for multi-location campaigns because of its higher volume of articles and local pages.

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites: Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry directories, local chambers of commerce. Google uses them to verify your business is real and located where you claim. Inconsistent citations confuse Google and hurt your local rankings. I build and clean up citations as part of every engagement.
