Branding Γ— Professional Services

Brand Identity for Professional Service Firms

Clients can't test a firm's advice before they hire it, so they judge the proposal, the deck and the website instead. I design professional services brand identity that makes those look as established as the work behind them.

I'm Kristian. I trained in visual communication at IED Madrid, and I do the branding work myself. When a firm hires me, I start with the principals: I interview them about how clients pick them. Then I design for what those clients actually read: proposals, PDFs, decks and LinkedIn, not just a logo.

The firms on this page are ones I branded. MERAIR is an international trade consultant in Bilbao. Sakaldi is an energy and telecom consulting firm, also in Bilbao. Pegria is a cybersecurity consulting firm in Los Angeles, and Privageo is a data privacy consulting firm in Irvine, California. On Pegria and Privageo I did the branding and my development partner, eSEO Space, did the development. Ariadna, an emotional coach in Barcelona, is here too.

Most of the thinking in a firm's brand doesn't shout. MERAIR's logo is six arrows pointing outward, and the negative space between them forms arrows pointing inward: export and import in one mark. Sakaldi's owner wanted the initials of his wife and daughter in the logo, so the M and the S sit inside the loops of the mark.

I haven't branded law firms, CPA firms, financial advisors or architecture firms, and I won't pretend otherwise. If you run one, the notes below say plainly which parts are general guidance and which come from my own work. For advisory practices, see branding for consulting firms, or read about my branding service as a whole.

Professional Services Branding Challenges

Your Brand Looks Younger Than Your Firm

You have years of client work behind you, but the logo and the documents still look like your first month. Prospects who don't know you yet can only judge what they see.

New Firm, Nothing to Point To Yet

A new practice has no client logos and no track record to show. How it presents itself is the one thing it fully controls on day one.

Your Whole Field Looks the Same

Navy blue, a shield or a column, a stock photo of a handshake. When every firm on a shortlist looks alike, the decision slides toward price.

Every Document Leaves the Office Looking Different

Each partner formats proposals their own way, and the deck, the letterhead and the LinkedIn banner don't match. The firm ends up looking like several small practices sharing an address.

Buyer notes

What Professional Services Buyers Look For

Trust, Not Trends

Firms sell judgment, so I keep the palette and type restrained and choose them to signal credibility rather than this year's style. For Privageo, navy blue carries the trust and deep red signals urgency, the right note for compliance deadlines. For Pegria, I chose navy and purple over the shields and hacker green that most cybersecurity brands fall back on.

Built for Proposals, Decks and LinkedIn

I build the identity as a system for the things a firm actually sends: PDFs, proposals, decks and LinkedIn, not just a logo file. Pegria's identity works on a building sign, a business card, a pitch deck and a 60-pixel app icon, without a separate design for each.

Start With How Clients Pick You

Before I sketch anything, I interview the principals about how their clients choose them. With Privageo, I first worked out how their prospects evaluate firms like theirs, and the website ended up mirroring their Discover, Build, Manage method. With MERAIR, the logo grew out of what the business actually does: import and export.

Law, Accounting, Advisory and Architecture Firms

I haven't branded law, CPA, financial or architecture firms myself, so treat this as general guidance, not experience. If the firm name carries partners' names, the mark should still work the day that name changes. If several partners approve the brand, agree at kickoff who gives the final yes, because a project moves at the speed of its decisions. If your profession limits what you can advertise, check those rules before a tagline goes on anything. For a visual practice like architecture, the photography direction in Brand Identity Pro matters as much as the logo.

A Brand System or a Logo File

What a firm gets from each, side by side.

Branding

  • I interview the principals about how clients choose your firm before I design anything
  • A restrained palette and type chosen to signal credibility
  • A system built for proposals, PDFs, decks and LinkedIn
  • Guidelines of 10-12 pages (Brand Identity) or 25-35 pages (Pro) that any designer or printer can follow
  • Every file in AI, EPS, PNG, SVG and PDF, and you own all of it

A logo on its own

  • Shows what you look like, not why a client should pick you
  • One mark, with no rules for color, type or layout
  • Each proposal and deck gets styled by whoever makes it
  • Nothing to hand a new hire, a printer or another designer
  • The look drifts a little with every new document

How it works

How a Branding Project for Professional Services Runs

  1. Week 1

    Interview the Principals

Brand Identity starts with a kickoff questionnaire of 15-20 questions, sent within 24 hours of payment. Brand Identity Pro starts with a 90-minute discovery workshop, recorded, where I ask how your clients choose you.

  2. Week 1

    Look at the Competition

For Brand Identity, a quick scan so you don't accidentally look like the firm down the street. For Pro, an analysis of your top 5-7 competitors' branding: where they all look the same, and where you can stand out.

  3. End of week 1 (Brand Identity) Β· Weeks 2-3 (Pro)

    Concepts

Brand Identity: 5 logo concepts shown in context on mockups, with the thinking behind each one. Pro: a positioning brief and 2-3 mood boards in week 1, then the complete logo system in weeks 2-3.

  4. Week 2 (Brand Identity) Β· Weeks 2-3 (Pro)

    Refine

3 revision rounds are included. If you're still not there, I keep refining within the direction you approved. Changing direction entirely is a new quote, and I'll tell you before I start.

  5. Weeks 4-5 (Pro)

    Build the Firm's Documents

The 25-35 page guidelines, the stationery suite, the email signature, the social media templates and the presentation template for proposals and pitches.

  6. End of week 2 (Brand Identity) Β· Week 5 (Pro)

    Hand-Off

Every file in an organized cloud folder, plus a walkthrough on how to use it: 15-30 minutes for Brand Identity, 45-60 minutes for Pro. You keep lifetime access to the files.

Search demand

What Firms Search For

Monthly US searches for professional services branding terms. Law firm branding alone gets more searches than any general term. Accounting, advisory and architecture firms search too, which is why the guidance above covers them even though I haven't branded those firms.

Branding for Professional Services FAQs

Brand Identity takes 1 to 2 weeks, and Brand Identity Pro takes 4 to 5 weeks. What stretches a project is waiting for decisions, not the design work. Pegria's identity took 3 weeks from kickoff to final delivery because the client decided quickly. As general advice, if several partners need to approve, agree at kickoff who gives the final yes.

It depends on the tier. Brand Identity includes 5 logo concepts, 3 revision rounds, a color palette and typography, 10-12 pages of brand guidelines, a business card design, social media profile templates and every file format. Brand Identity Pro adds a brand discovery workshop, a visual competitor analysis, a complete logo system, 25-35 pages of guidelines, a full stationery suite, a presentation template and photography direction.

Not always. Some firms need an identity built from scratch, and others just need to clean up what they already have. On the call I'll tell you which, and I won't oversell it.

Yes, in Brand Identity Pro. It includes a presentation template for PowerPoint or Google Slides that you can use for proposals, pitches and internal decks, plus letterhead, folders and an HTML email signature. Brand Identity covers the business card and social profile templates, including LinkedIn.

You do. Every file and every variation is yours, source files included, in AI, EPS, PNG, SVG and PDF. There are no licensing fees or recurring charges, and you keep lifetime access to the folder.

The work, written down before you pay. On US projects, the list is: brand discovery complete, 5 logo concepts presented, color palette and typography presented, revision rounds delivered per the agreed scope, final files delivered in all formats, and the brand guidelines document delivered. If I don't ship every item within 30 days, you can ask in writing, within 7 days, for your deposit back. The clock pauses while I'm waiting on you for content or an approval, and if that waiting passes 15 days in total, the Proof Period closes. It covers what I ship, not how prospects respond to it.
